Mens sana in corpore sano: A sound mind in a sound body

Integrative Medicine, is the integration of many forms of medicine to provide the best total health care for the patient. This includes the integration of both Eastern and Western philosophy and also the Integration of Traditional medical care with Naturopathic and Chiropractic medicine.

A Naturopathic Doctor’s practice is similar in scope to a general practitioner. Naturopathic treatment centers on correcting the underlying "dis-ease" versus just treating the symptom.

Dr. Seligman’s therapeutic specialties include the use of clinical nutrition, botanical medicine and Natural Hormones. In addition, Dr. Seligman uses Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture to help to prevent or treat disease.

Dr. Lecovin’s therapeutic specialties include the use of clinical nutrition, botanical medicine and Chiropractic medicine including exercise and rehabilitation therapy. In addition Dr. Lecovin uses a form of Acupuncture, different from Traditional Chinese medicine called Intramuscular Stimulation or “dry needling”.

Clinical nutrition refers to the use of diet and nutritional supplements as a medical therapy. The majority of medical conditions can be treated effectively with diet alone or by supplementation of nutrients above physiological doses. Food allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, acid reflux (GERD), asthma, migraines, high blood pressure, acne, arthritis, PMS, eczema, high cholesterol, hypoglycemia, depression, anxiety, pain and ADD are just some of the many health conditions that are responsive to nutritional therapy.

Botanical Medicine has been used effectively in treating various illnesses for thousands of years. Recently there has been a great renaissance in the appreciation of plants as medicine as a result of an increase in the scientific understanding of how these medicines work. Botanical medicines are often more effective than prescription drugs, but without the side effects.

Dr. Seligman may use Natural Hormones to treat illnesses that may have resulted in low levels of the bodies’ own production of Hormones, or to prevent diseases associated with low hormones after menopause for example: Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, and heart disease. Natural Hormones differ from Conventional Hormone Replacement Therapy in their chemistry and how the body recognizes and responds to their familiar chemical structure instead of a synthetic or unfamiliar chemical structure.

There are many different forms of Acupuncture. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is a system of acupuncture that has been practiced for thousands of years and which uses a Chinese diagnosis to determine the location of insertion of needles along the acupuncture meridians. Each point on the meridian (there are 365 standard points and hundreds of extra points) has a function associated with the Chinese diagnosis.

Dr. Lecovin uses a form of acupuncture called intramuscular stimulation. This acupuncture has been more recently developed based on the scientific understanding of trigger points in the body. Intramuscular stimulation (IMS) uses orthopedic, neurologic and Chiropractic assessment techniques. Points on the body are stimulated based upon their anatomical relationship to the areas of dysfunction. Stimulation of these points by Acupuncture needles normalizes muscle tone, balances the nervous and circulatory systems, stimulates the production of pain modulating chemicals and helps to create healthier tissue.

Chiropractic Medicine refers to the manipulation of the spine and extremities to restore normal movement and enhance the functioning of the nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems. Dr. Lecovin uses chiropractic manipulation in conjunction with deep tissue massage (neuro-muscular reeducation/soft tissue release) exercise and stretching to ensure the maintenance of good musculoskeletal health between treatments.

Diet Therapy refers to to one’s diet to enhance their health and well being or to treat a medical condition. An allergy elimination diet is a tough diet to complete on your own. Dr. Seligman and Lecovin are experts at allergy elimination diets and can help with the reintroduction of foods to determine the provoking agent. Following an allergy elimination diet, a Rotation diet may be helpful. The word “diet” often has negative associations for people. Diet therapy does not have to be negative, Dr. Seligman and Lecovin can help you make slow changes to your diet to enhance your health for the Long Term. You are what you eat! The Feingold diet or a low salicylate diet can also be used in the treatment of many different physical as well as mental health complaints. Dr. Seligman can help guide you through this difficult diet.

Healing from illness or preventing disease is a process that occurs on many levels. Integrative medicine can help you to heal your body, mind and spirit.
