What
are Amino Acids?
When
we eat protein in our diet, the protein is digested into smaller
particles, so that they can be absorbed. These smaller particles
are called amino acids. Amino acids are absorbed from the
digestive tract into the blood stream where they are carried
to different parts of the body to perform different functions.
What
do Amino Acids do?
Amino acids are carried in the blood to various parts of the
body where they perform a variety of functions including the
building of proteins such as those used in hair, nails and
muscles. They also build proteins essential to immune system
function and blood sugar regulation. Some amino acids, function
in every cell of your body to help generate ATP, the energy
molecule of the body. Studies have demonstrated abnormal levels
of amino acids in patients suffering from chronic fatigue.
Some amino acids are carried in the bloodstream to the brain
where they function to make neurotransmitters. Studies have
demonstrated abnormal levels of amino acids in patients (and
rats!) suffering from depression, anxiety and ADD/ADHD etc.
These studies have been used by the pharmaceutical industry
to design new drugs.
How
do Amino Acids help with Depression, Anxiety, ADD/ADHD etc?
When our amino acids are in balance, the neurotransmitters
in the nervous system are in balance and we feel happy, we
feel calm, and we can focus and concentrate. When the amino
acids are out of balance, the neurotransmitters are out of
balance and we may feel depressed, or anxious, or have trouble
with focus or concentration. Depending on your symptoms and
medical history, a focused program of amino acids may be described
to help balance your brain chemistry and relieve your symptoms.
How
do you get started?
A first visit is necessary to determine if this is right for
you, there may be other illnesses that can cause depression,
anxiety, ADD/ADHD or other ailments of the nervous system.
These should be ruled out prior to getting involved in amino
acid therapy.
